Starting Career in SAP Security Part 1

Qualification and Required skills: Hard work and willing to Learn

Introduction to SAP Security:
SAP is a business application package. With SAP system business information like Sales data, Product pricing, product composition, profit margin, employee information etc area available in one system.  SAP helps companies follow a best business practices.  SAP is more to do with business implementation than IT implementation

General IT Security in Windows:   Security is basically protecting the information. In windows server we have folders and we create three folders for three groups of users finance, sales and production.  Our basic intension is not let the finance users access the sales folders and sales user not to access the finance folders. But the General Manager of the company should access all the folders.  In this case we will create four groups and assign users to these groups based on the department they belong.   Then we will give access to the folders for appropriate groups

About SAP Security:

The same general principle applies to protecting data in SAP. In SAP the data is accessed by Transactions.  Transaction is nothing but a 4 or more characters which enables the user execute a particular piece of code attached to the transaction.  For example if we need to create an asset in SAP we will use transaction AS01 and to display an asset the transaction is AS03.  The primary duty of the Security Administrator is to group the transactions. SAP has 106805 transactions in the system.  But most the clients may be using only fraction of these transactions.  Let say for example client uses only 3000 transactions.  They we will only group those transaction

Following will be job of Security Administrator from 50,000 foot level:

1.       Working with business users and grouping the transaction into functional areas ( Finance, Manufacturing, HR etc)

2.       Then regrouping each functional area transactions into Business functional transaction

3.       Then map the Business functions to user

This discussion will be continued in Part 2
